What is NAD+?
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is not a peptide. It is a naturally occurring coenzyme present in almost every cell. It helps:
- Convert carbohydrates, fats and proteins into usable cellular energy
- Transfer electrons during mitochondrial energy production
- Support DNA-repair enzymes called PARPs
- Regulate sirtuins and other cellular-signalling systems
- Maintain the balance between NAD+ and its reduced form, NADH
These biological functions are well established. What is much less certain is whether supplying large quantities of NAD+ produces extra energy, slows ageing or improves recovery in otherwise healthy people.
